Plastic canvas also known as vinyl weave comes in different shapes and sizes. The three main sizes are 7, 10, and 14. Mesh sizes are listed by the number of holes per linear inch. This is used to make different kinds of crafts and is very easy to use. This craft has been around for a long time and it’s surprising what form and shape plastic can make.
As for this craft being popular there are many pattern books out there and they are all color coded so they are easy to follow. As I myself am a lover of this craft, over the years I have made so many things and have enjoyed it and continue on still doing it. There are patterns for anything you can imagine holidays, flowers, clocks, baby things, and just to many to write them all down. You would be amazed at what you can accomplish. My favorite ones to do are the clocks that do really work and Christmas and Halloween decorations. There is such a wide variety of books out there for you to choose from.
There are three sizes of sheets that you have a choice to work with, depending on what you want to make. You have some that are stiff and some that are soft, and they also come in different colors. Other plastic that you can use are circles, hearts, triangles, and squares which work well with some patterns. The softer sheets I use when I make three-dimensional projects and the stiffer ones for stand-up or flat ones. The color sheets are useful in matching with the wool you use.
When doing this kind of craft I use four ply wool to complete my task. There are all kinds of colors to choose from and different sizes that I use for each project I do. For the seven mesh size holes I use the regular size wool, for the 10 mesh I would split the wool in two, and for the 14 I use embroidery thread which works very well for these sheets. The tread is also good when doing scenery pictures. Which size, you choose will surprise you in the end result.
Choosing your needles is important too as some needles will not fit through the plastic holes. I use craft needles not sewing needles to do my projects. The difference between the two is the ones for plastic canvas have bigger eyes in them to make it easier to get the wool through and blunt on the end. The needles come in one size so I compromise and use small darn needles for my smaller canvas and wool. They work well too.
Keep on hand a pair of scissors and a marker as these tools are very handy. When cutting out a pattern you have to be careful not to cut too much off, if you do it ruins what you were cutting out and you have to start over. The marker which is a dry erase I use for marking out the pattern on the plastic which makes it easier to cut out and it wipes off easy with a cloth.
Extra Craft Supplies
With there being so many projects out there for a person to do I always keep extra supplies on hand to ensure that I can complete my project. I stock up on eyes of different sizes and colors, flowers, ribbons, glue gun and sticks, felts, little birds, parts for my clocks. Anything that might help me to complete what I started.
As a lover of doing crafts I have turned plastic canvas into another one of my hobbies. I find it a good pastime for me. I look through my books and find what I want to do and collect everything I need to finish my task and wait to see the end results.
